Match Report Taken from The Langwarrin Website Langwarrin 2 Frankston 2 14/6/03 This was the big one, third against first. Langwarrin,
looking to reel in the their local rivals Frankston Strikers. If Strikers
won this one it would be very difficult for Langy to catch them at the
top. All was in readiness for derby day.
The biggest crowd of the season so far witnessed an enthralling match
between two class teams.
It was also ladies day at Langwarrin, and the girls were treated to half
price drinks and all had a whale of a time.
The game was played at a frantic pace with neither side wanting to yield
an inch. Chris Quinn was having a great game against former Langy boy
Terry Wogan and the Rock Paul Arnauld was more than adequate against sharp
shooter Dale White. The first goal came in the twenty ninth minute when
Chris Quinn spotted Strikers keeper Chris Jones off his line and decided
to have a pop, and from a full seventy yards sent the ball sailing over
the head over the stretching Jones. 1-0 Langy. Langy held the lead held
until half time and were definitely worth it.
The second half started the same as the first had ended, with Langy having
the upper hand. The second goal came in the thirty fourth minute of the
second half after Trent Fairclough, who had been as solid as ever all
game, picked up the ball about twenty five yards from goal, he beat two
players and played an exquisite ball in to Ben Caffrey just inside the
box. Ben Weaved his magic, danced around the keeper and walked the ball
in to the back of the net. 2-0 Langy. Both teams were giving everything
and both keepers were kept busy with Dastey in the Langwarrin goal pulling
off an unbelievable finger tip save late in the first half.
Full time was approaching and the points looked safe for Langwarrin. That
was until Ben Caffrey received a great through ball. He pushed the ball
forward and was impeded by the Frankston central defender. This was adjudged
as a cynical foul which brought a red card and Frankston were down to
ten men. This Lifted the visitors and suddenly Langwarrin were under the
pump. With five minutes left of normal time, Smart of Frankston found
him self on the edge of the Langy penalty area. Past one defender, past
two and bang, sent the ball screaming into the roof of the net. 2-1. Could
it be possible that after dominating for most of the game that the home
team might blow it, surely not. Well Frankston had other ideas and just
four minutes later the ball was crossed in from the left and Sancini rose
uncontested at the far post to head home the equaliser 2-2.
So yet again Langwarrin were left to lament what might have been and think
about the one that got away. The positive from the game as far as Langwarrin
is concerned is this. If Strikers are the bench mark, then Langwarrin
need not fear any opposition this season because they had their measure.
Next week Langwarrin travel to second place Richmond and again it is a
game they must not lose. It’s getting tight at the top and on current
form the Langy boys will be up there contesting for the major prize come
September Best for Langy: C. Quinn, T. Fairclough
